Sometimes whether I want it or not a song comes unbidden into my head and I can’t let it go. Today the song is “Walk With Me.” It’s a lovely song about the nature of the church in the hymnal The Faith We Sing. Usually when I get stuck on a song it’s my mind refusing to be quiet. My mind, just like everyone's, doesn’t like quiet spaces and so it fills the space. But today I think its more than that. Today I keep singing the words over and over. I think it’s a prayer. “Walk with me, I will walk with you and build the land that God has planned where love shines through.” When I look at everything that our country is facing right now…two wars, a presidential election, economic woes beyond anything we’ve seen since the Great Depression and the rebuilding of cities and towns and industries after hurricanes and tropical storms…I see a need for each other. I see the need to reach out to one another and walk through these days of uncertainty with the strength of our faith. I see the need to take each other’s hand in fellowship and compassion. I see the need to look beyond male and female, black or brown or white, democrat or republican. I see the need to listen to one another, truly listen and respond with thoughtfulness. I see the need to speak out against injustices not named in the press. I see the need to walk with one another with values so basic we've forgotten them: hospitality, justice, mercy, compassion and fellowship. So…I make the invitation…”Walk with me and I will walk with you.”
